Exclusive Spa Apprenticeship — Frequently Asked Questions
The Exclusive Spa Apprenticeship Program provides structured cosmetology training through a combination of on-the-job training (OJT) and related and supplemental instruction. Apprentices learn while working under approved supervision and completing the education required by the apprenticeship program.
No. An apprenticeship combines classroom-related instruction with supervised training in an actual workplace. Apprentices are responsible for completing both their required instruction and documented OJT hours.
Apprentices are employees and must be paid according to their apprenticeship agreement. Under the California requirements effective January 1, 2027, apprentices cannot be paid by commission, required to rent a station, or treated as independent contractors.
Under the new requirements, an apprenticeship program sponsor may not charge an apprentice participation fees other than the actual cost of textbooks and minimum equipment.
Apprentices will need the required professional equipment and textbooks for their training. Exclusive Spa will provide a specific student starter-kit list so students know what equipment is required before beginning.
On-the-job training is completed at an approved establishment under appropriate supervision. The program sponsor must ensure the establishment has workers’ compensation insurance and provides services within the apprentice’s scope of practice.
Yes. Apprentices are expected to maintain accurate OJT records. The sample Rules and Regulations requires apprentices to complete an OJT log and provides for periodic review of those records.
Yes. The sample program rules include trainer evaluations covering attendance, punctuality, preparation, and quality of work, as well as instructor progress reviews covering classroom performance and participation.
Attendance and completion of required training are important parts of the apprenticeship. The program’s final policies should explain absences, make-up instruction, incomplete OJT logs, disciplinary procedures, and circumstances that could lead to cancellation of an apprenticeship agreement.
No. Effective January 1, 2027, California’s new requirements specifically state that an apprentice cannot be an independent contractor, be required to rent a station, or be paid by commission.
The apprenticeship program sponsor and participating establishment have specific responsibilities. The sample rules also require trainers to provide diversified training across the work-process areas and coordinate OJT with classroom instruction.
The sample Rules and Regulations states that after satisfactory completion and endorsement by the apprenticeship committee, the apprentice receives a Certificate of Completion of Apprenticeship from the California Department of Industrial Relations, Division of Apprenticeship Standards.
Exclusive Spa Apprenticeship is currently completing the applicable California apprenticeship approval and program-development requirements. Enrollment availability will be announced once all required approvals and program requirements are in place.
